What are the different types of seafloor sediments and what are the factors that control the distribution of each major sediment type? Where does each major seafloor sediment type tend to accumulate in greatest quantity? Hello! I hope this posting helps you in your studies!
The main types of sediment are:
Terrigenous sediments- most abundant; originate on continents or islands from erosion, volcanic eruptions and blown dust. Some examples of these types are quartz sand, clays and estuarine mud. So far as their distribution, they are dominantly found on the continental margins, abyssal plains, and polar ocean floors. Rates of erosion as well as the size of the sediment particles are the main factors in their distribution.
Biogenous sediments- next most abundant after terrigenous. They are organic in origin (made by living organisms) ...
In this solution, I discuss the different types of seafloor sediments. Included are two links to helpful diagrams!
