The main types of sediment are:
Terrigenous sediments- most abundant; originate on continents or islands from erosion, volcanic eruptions and blown dust. Some examples of these types are quartz sand, clays and estuarine mud. So far as their distribution, they are dominantly found on the continental margins, abyssal plains, and polar ocean floors. Rates of erosion as well as the size of the sediment particles are the main factors in their distribution.
Biogenous sediments- next most abundant after terrigenous. They are organic in origin (made by living organisms) ...
