Currently, the effects of the Exxon Valdez spill are slowly fading. Original estimates of two to three decades for complete ecosystem recovery appear to have been optimistic, however. The oil has persisted in the intertidal zone much longer than anticipated (Reuters 2005).
The local community was largely dependent on fishing. Many fish processing plants were closed after the spill, causing job loss. Due to financial hardship, 34,000 fishermen, suppliers and processors sued Exxon, and were awarded $5 billion in 1996, the largest punitive damage verdict in American history.
