Purpose

Created in 1995, as the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was established in the wake of the Second World War, the World Trade Organization (WTO) takes pride in the fact that it currently serves as "the only international organization dealing with the global rules of trade between nations", with its main purpose being "to ensure that (international) trade flows as smoothly, predictably, and freely as possible".
The observed, end result of the efforts of the World Trade Organization is an increased level assurance by consumers and producers that "they can enjoy secure supplies and greater choice of finished products, components, raw materials and services that they use, and that foreign markets will remain open to them" (WTO, 2007).
