TUTORIAL
A:
Return on investment (ROI) is a ratio that expresses the relationship between a desired rate or return and the investment made into the project/investment.

Because ROI is the only measure of performance, the managers will be expected to surpass the value.

Double-click the table to see the formulas used.
The manager expects to make $126,000. This will be about $36,000 ($126,000 - 10% (900,000)) above the requirement.
It will therefore be very wise for the East manager to accept the additional funds. This is because he will earn returns far above the benchmark of 10%.

B:
If you observe from the above calculations, the East manager expects to earn $126,000. This is about $36,000 above the requirement. This surplus will still be recognized as income for the company as a whole.
In comparison, the other divisions can only produce about 11% returns. This is lower than what the East Manger can do. The company will therefore benefit.

C:
Residual income refers to the difference between the operating income and the expected returns on investment.

Table 2
From Table 2, you will observe that the residual income, for East division, is positive. The positive value means that the department is able to generate enough returns above what is expected.
