1. Case 1: Review the requirements of the Chapter 3 Mini-Case, parts b through j. Then apply those same requirements to do an analysis of Brinker International, which is a real company. Do the analysis on the basis of the figures for the most recent year. For part g, use the 2 most recent years. Download 10K financial statements for the most recent year for Brinker. A good source is the company's home page. Also compare the Brinker ratios to the industry averages. You'll note that some of the company's ratios you calculate won't agree with those found on the web page. Ratios are calculated in different ways, however, you should use the formulas in the text. Also, you won't find all of the industry averages, but you will find most of them. You'll need the company's stock price for several of the ratios; use the fiscal year end price. = $7,486.68.

The sale expansion increases the sales by over $2.4 million, but net income decreased by more than $190,000. Assets almost doubled. Debt and funds provided by suppliers increased, but retained earnings fell due to the year's loss.

B) What do you conclude from the statement of cash flows? (for Brinker International as per instruction)

Net CF from operations = $ 297,402, because of increased net income ($51,722 in 2008 to $ 137,704 in 2010) and increases in working capital due to huge increase in cash and cash equivalents ($94,156 in 2009 to $ 344,624 in 2010). The firm reduced their long-term debt and as a result their retained earnings increased.

C) What is free cash flow? Why is it important? What are the five uses of FCF?

To be specific, the value of a company's operations depends on its expected future free cash flows, defined as after-tax operating profit minus the investments in working capital and fixed assets necessary to sustain the business. Thus, FCF is the cash flow available for distribution to all investors (stockholders and debtholder) after the company has made all the investments in fixed assets, new products, and working capital necessary to sustain ongoing operations.
