Job Description: HR manager

Problem: Favoritism in the workplace.

In this situation, I was managing the HR function of a plant that had 250 employees. It was a small private company with a lot of the "good ol" boy systems in place, therefore, overtime, all promotions and predominant management practices were being made based on favoritism. I had been in the job about 1 year when I had a tough decision to make. Either accept that the most talented and deserving workers were going to continue being passed up based on the "clicks" in management selecting their friends, or, take a stand and try to change the culture. The problem I faced was that I risked losing my career with the company and, I had no support that I could readily identify to help institute a change.
