Corporate social responsibility refers to the responsibility of a company for the effects of its decisions on society, its environment, and its financial well being. In the context of purchasing and supply chain management these have wide ramifications. In the context of purchasing the responsibility begins with the person who makes purchases of goods and services and extends to company policies in forming and implementing purchasing rules. In supply chain management, the responsibility ranges from interaction of people in the supply chain to the global quest for low cost products.

In purchasing and supply chain, corporate social responsibility begins with individuals. Individuals may misuse their position for personal gain (Craig R. Carter, Dale S. Rogers, 2008). The purchase officer/manager's position can be used for creating advantages for the person, their families, and friends. Corporate social responsibility can be ensured if the purchasing officer justifies in writing why he is purchasing from firms where he is having a personal interest.
