In 1997, Canada launched the first ING DIRECT "virtual bank" in the world, so this global brand is truly a Canadian success story. It was first launched to meet a need, as Canadians were deemed to have no real choice in banking, even though Canada had five big banks. The ING DIRECT opened its virtual doors to help Canadians increase savings interest rates, as all five bank's savings account were similar, and performed about the same too, with low interest (unless you could meet demanding minimums) and many service charges. ING DIRECT offers banking services to its client virtually.
