The new chief executive officer (CEO) of your company is a strong believer in the four functions of management theory. In preparation for a management meeting, he has asked you to write a report that he can use to explain the theory to his management team. In the report, he would like to see some specific examples of firms that practiced these four functions. For a company with which you are familiar, use each of the four functions to do the following:

Assess how the overall management team performed in terms of the four functions of management, which are as follows: Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling.

Identify and explain the strong points of the managers. Identify and explain areas in which improvement is needed. Specifically regarding the controlling function of management, answer the following questions:
1. How did most employees feel about the monitoring of activities that managers put in place to monitor employee performance and overall company performance?
2. How well was the need for controls and monitoring explained to everyone before the controls were put in place?
3. Did the controls have a meaningful impact on the overall department or company performance? Cite some specific examples.

Planning
Planning is the core function of management activity as rest three functions are based on effective planning process of management. The aim of planning function is to evaluate the current position of the company and make plan to improve the position in future (Cooke & Learning, 2009). Planning is done to make effective utilization of man, money, machinery and material. It facilitates the managers to resolve the problems and make effective decision for the smooth growth of the firm as well as to achievement of objectives and goals on time.
Management team of Apple also uses planning function to evaluate the past results, current performance of the firm and improve company's performance in future to be in competition. Moreover, it always prefers to use a work system and process of planning to generate valuable result from the internal resources to match the external requirements (Apple Inc, 2011). During planning function, manager of Apple put efforts to integrate all the stakeholders to work in favor of the firm and to maximize the productivity, so that they enjoy huge profits. Planning ensures the command to take risk and work under uncertainty situations and mitigation of these risks in an effective manner (Lliev, Lindinger & Poettler, 2004).
