The United States Northern Command works in conjunction with the Department of Defense to help in the homeland defense efforts. The USNC protects the people, national power, and freedom of action of the United States of America. In addition to homeland security from foreign threats, the USNC's scope includes responding to natural disasters such as the California Wild Fires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters (United States Northern Command, 2008).

Employees are of the greatest risk when it comes to protecting homeland security as they have ready access to sensitive information. This information could be used to commit crimes such as personal identity theft up to treason against the United States.
