The list was compiled following an analysis of over 3,500,000 words of text ( http://web.uvic.ca/~gluton/awl/id18.htm). It is definitely a good starting point and one indicator that we are knowledgeable, at least in these sets of words. However, tone, dress and presentation style are also very important to present as knowledgeable and well educated. Another important factor to consider is that AWL focuses on a small percentage of the English words, and it is not academic specific, which is also imperative for academic success. That is, in addition to these words, we also need to master the language and concepts of our particular field of study (e.g., business) to be convincing about our knowledge ability and education status.

Actually, I just went through the 570 words presented in AWL and I do agree somewhat with Averil Coxhead's claim. Why? First, I experienced the word lists to form this opinion. Second, it is research based so it does have some reliability in terms of being the words most often used (e.g., list was compiled following an analysis of over 3,500,000 words of text), which is clearly important for us to know for academic success. ...
