•What is the difference between performance measurement and quality improvement processes?
The distinction between performance measurement and quality improvement is interrelated ; quality improvement is a measure of the performance. According to the National Quality Center, performance measurement provides objective and quantitative values to subjective experiences. (1) A performance measure is a "mechanism that assign quantity to an attribute by comparison to a criterion. " (1) A performance measurement is a quality measure that is a mechanism for assessing the degree to which a provider competently and safely delivers services that are appropriate for the patient in the optimal time period. Quality measure is a mechanism that assign a quantity to quality of care by comparison to a criterion. So the only way to know if the quality of care is improving is to measure performance.
According to the Institute of Medicine, performance measurement enables quality improvement throught the measurement of performance based upon quality indicators. Therefore, performance measurement can lead to the quality of monitoring. (1)
