5. What is the basic difference between absorption costing and variable costing?

The basic difference between absorption costing and variable costing is in the accounting and treatment of fixed manufacturing costs. Under absorption costing, fixed manufacturing costs are included in the value of ending inventory whereas they are expensed-off in the period of incurrence under variable costing. Under absorption costing, fixed manufacturing costs are treated as inventoriable costs as against period costs under variable costing.
