In order to qualify for a dependency exemption, you must not be the dependent of another individual. The individual(s) you are claiming an exemption for must also be U.S. citizens, U.S. resident alien, U.S. national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico. Exceptions are made for certain adopted children. An individual who is a U.S. citizen or U.S. national must have legally adopted a child who is not a naturalized or born citizen of the U.S.
