    Man's basic problem is sin. It is not so easy to define its cause. If we go back to the Garden of Eden, we see that the cause of sin was rejection of the "tree of life." This is symbolic of the way of life defined by the Creator, known as the "Torah" in Jewish thought. Adam and Eve were told they were free to eat of the tree (only forbidden to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), but they didn't eat from the tree of life.
