The people groups of Africa and America have many similarities with each other. Both are relatively close to Europe relative to the distance and time involved to travel to China or India. Both were populated by mostly illiterate people groups who relied on oral tradition. Both were populated by numerous groups of people who were antagonistic toward each other. Both places were also not explored or populated primarily as sources of wealth. The technological advancement of both the Americas and Africa was also far inferior to the technological advancements of India and especially China. As a result of this some groups of Native Americans and Africans chose to adopt Western technology, consumer goods, beliefs and societal norms more readily than did other groups of people. Cultural syncretism resulted in shared words, foods, ideas about life and religious beliefs. It was not long before some Indians and Africans "converted" to Christianity.
