The current state of the economy is that the credit crisis has shaken the US economy. Presently there is a reduction in of lending and in some cases there is a stoppage of lending. There are increasing fears of recession. The current borrowers are not transparent about their collaterals, and debt obligations. The Federal Reserve has made dire to bank capital injections but this money is not being used for lending to borrowers.
According to the US Commerce Department the GDP increased by 0.9% in the first quarter in 2008, in the second quarter it increased by 2.8% and in the third quarter it declined by 0.3%, some other estimates place the decline at 1.5% and in the fourth quarter the decline is estimated to be 2.75%. In the third quarter of 2008 for which figures are available the industrial production fell by 6%.. The retail sales in Oct 2008 were declining fro instance Target Corporation had sales growth of -4.8, the Newman Marcus Group had a fall of -26.8% but Wal-Mart Stores had a positive growth of 2.4%.
