The above table shows a sample of students by major. Round % answers for 12-17 to one decimal place.

12 What is the probability that a student chosen at random is majoring health?

13 What is the probability that a student chosen at random is Male?

14 What is the probability that a student chosen at random is majoring in Tech and is male?

15 What is the probability that a student chosen at random is majoring in Tech or is male?

16 Is a student chosen at random is Male, what is the probability that they are majoring in Tech?

17 Is a student chosen at random is majoring in Tech, what is the probability that they are Male?

Use the following situation to answer questions 18-24. About 5% of the population has an allergy to dogs (actually it is much smaller than that!) and test for the allergy is 90% accurate.

18 Fill in the table using a sample population of 10,000 people, then answer the questions below. Round to the nearest whole number.

Test Shows Positive Test Shows Negative Total
Allergic to dogs
Not Allergic to dogs
Total

19 If you have a dog allergy, what is the probability you will test positive? Round % to 1 decimal place.

20 If you tested positive, what is the probability you have a dog allergy? Round % to 1 decimal place.

21 If you tested negative, what is the probability you have a dog allergy? Round % to 2 decimal places

22 What is this test result called?______

23 If you tested positive, what is the probability you do not have a dog allergy? Round % to 1 decimal place.

24 What is this test result called?______

12
Total number of students majoring in Health = 549
Total number of students = 3016
Probability = 549/3016 = 18.2%

13
Total number of Male students = 1547
Total number of students = 3016
Probability = 1547/3016 = 51.3%

14
Number of students majoring in Tech and Male = 686
Total number of students = 3016
Probability = 686/3016 = 22.7%

15
Total number of students majoring in Tech = 858
Total number of male students = 1547
Number of students majoring in Tech and Male = 686
858 + 1547 - 686 ...

  • "Thank you so very much. This is very well done and presented. I certainly appreciate your hard work. I am a novice at statistics and it is nice to know there are those out there who really do understand. Thanks again for an excellent posting. SPJ"
  • "GREAT JOB!!!"
  • "Hello, thank you for your answer for my probability question. However, I think you interpreted the second and third question differently than was meant, as the assumption still stands that a person still independently ranks the n options first. The probability I am after is the probability that this independently determined ranking then is equal to one of the p fixed rankings. Similarly for the third question, where the x people choose their ranking independently, and then I want the probability that for x people this is equal to one particular ranking. I was wondering if you could help me with this. "
