The internet has many effects on democratization of countries. Some see it as a threat to the growing dictatorships in their countries. Some see it as a welcome change. And others view it as a right that is part of being a citizen of a democratic country.

For some countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, China and Cuba, the internet poses a threat to their existing regime. In 2001, the Taliban banned internet use, as they saw it as a growing threat to their control over the country (Simon, 2002). This example shows the internet has great effect on democracy. It feeds the need for independence and therefore, those countries (developing or not) that thrive on dictatorship feel threatened by it's existence.

Another article by Garry Rodan, suggests that the internet "has generally been heralded as a force for the breakdown of authoritarian political control". In many countries, developed and developing the internet is seen as "bad". It allows the citizens to explore what they do not have, a democratic society. The internet allows them freedom, which they would otherwise not have in a non-democratic society.

Factors such as cost and upkeep contribute to the pros and cons of how the internet effects democracy. Those in underdeveloped countries are less likely to engage in the internet, therefore forced to accept the regime in which they ...
