1. After studying risk factors for the maladaptive outcomes of adolescent behavior, prevention strategies can still take place. Some prevention strategies that can be initiated even though the adolescent has expressed maladaptive behavior are:
-Initiating family-based counseling where the entire family is present at the session. An atmosphere of "no one is to blame" should be the approach of the counselor/therapist where each individual is provided with an equal amount of time to speak;
-Strengthen and develop communication styles (including conflict resolution) within the home. If parents do not know how to talk to their teenagers, it has been published that teenagers can resort to self-harming behavior. In most cases, the parents do not think that there is anything wrong with them and external mediation may be necessary for the sake of the adolescent;
-The identification and professional assistance for parental mental health problems. This is a growing issue. Many highly stressed parents develop mental health problems while raising their children;
-Identifying family stress, abuse, and neglect. These can range from minor to severe cases. External social assistance can be beneficial.
