For example: When approaching a person with visible signs that a person has a disability (i.e. a white cane, seeing-eye dog, etc), the police officer should speak clearly, enunciating clearly and slowly to ensure that the individual understands what is being said.
The first thing a police officer should do is to clearly identify himself as a law enforcement agent so as not to alarm the individual. It is important for officers to state clearly and completely any directions or instructions which would include any information that is posted visually. Officers must read out loud in full any documents that a person who is blind or visually impaired needs to sign. Before taking photos or fingerprints, it is a good idea to describe the procedures in advance so that the individual will know what to expect. ...
