Traditional religions have been historically structured and have influenced certain societies in different ways. For example, in non-democratic countries, the official state religion often limits religious diversity and tolerance.
In many Western nations, people now have more freedom to explore different belief systems without being viewed as social outcastes or frowned upon by the general population. However, this would not ring true for certain subcultures within the United States of America, for example. In a study completed that asked of the "religiosity" of the people living in each state, the Bible Belt states or Confederate states were listed as the most religious and the Ivy League states were listed as the least religious. Now, rather than "religious," it is probably more accurate to say "practising Christianity."
