In essence, Audrey Hepburn's personality can be explicated using Freudian and Adlerian theories. Since Freud alleged that we must balance our instincts with social acceptability, Hepburn's life and achievements attest to this sense of equilibrium achieved among her social, romantic, professional, and family life eventually. For example, much of her humanitarian work correlates with the superego's function as a moral guardian, as her conscience was strong and encouraging as an activist.

When her father left the family and divorced her mother, there was likely some semblance of superego forces here within Aubrey as well which could probably explain her psychosexually and her later number of marriages and relationship strains romantically as a result. Much of the anxieties that she experienced in life was likely the outcome of her eminent conflicts among the id, ego, superego accordingly.

Additionally, the fact that she endured Nazi occupation as a child and witnessed the war's atrocities further aligns with some of the instinctual forces that she probably experienced.
