1). Language patterns or case examples that exclude or demean any groups are an issue that needs to be rectified. Some ways teachers can do this is by:
? Using terms of equal weight when referring to parallel groups: girls and boys rather than boys and young ladies?]
? Using both she and he during discussions and in writing, and students should be encouraged to do the same?
? Recognizing that students may come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds?
? Refraining from remarks that make assumptions about your students' experiences, such as, "Now, when your parents were in college . . . "?
? Refraining from remarks that make assumptions about the nature of your students' families, such as, "Are you going to visit your parents over spring break?"
