William James ideas, which resulted in the James-Lange theory or emotional experience, became central to functionalism. James criticized the claim of structural psychology that sensations constitute the simplest mental elements and must therefore be the major focus of psychological inquiry. The James-Lange theory states that conscious thought is experienced as a flowing and continuous stream, not as a collection of frozen elements. As a result of people's experiences, the automatic nervous system creates reactions such as perspiration, dryness of mouth, muscular tension, or increased heart rate. As a result of these physiological events emotions happen, rather than emotions being the cause of these events. The following sequence occurs:
Event > arousal > interpretation > emotion
