Female genital mutilation (FGM) 'comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons' (World Health Organization [WHO]). Based on this health report, FGM consists of removing and damaging healthy and normal female genital tissues of both women and girls. Four types of FGM are listed in the WHO medical organization.
