The Establishment Clause is the portion of the First Amendment to Constitution (the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights) that states that "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion". The First Amendment protects "freedom of religion, speech or press, assembly and petition". The Establishment Clause prevented Congress from establishing a national religion. The desire for freedom of religion was a particularly important point of contention when the Constitution was drafted.
