The Older Then Dirt potting soil company uses a machine to fill 40-pound bags of enriched potting soil. The machine has a process standard deviation of 4 ounces. A new industry group wants to sets limits on what can be called a 40-pound bag: a 40-pound bad of dirt must weight at least 39 pounds, 2 ounces and no more than 40 pounds, 14 ounces. Remember that there are 16 ounces in a pound.
a) Using our text's definition of the process capability ratio (Cp), what is this company's process capability? Interpret your resulting calculation relative to whether the process is capable of meeting the industry group's standards? Explain.
b) Now suppose that the company has determined that the mean of its process is equal to 40 pounds 4 ounces and the standard deviation remains at 4 ounces. Using our text's definition of the process capability index (Cpk), what is this company's process capability? Interpret your resulting calculation relative to whether the process is capable of meeting the industry group's standards? Explain.
c) Interpret the results that you found from a) and b). Include a discussion on how can these be used to assess the Older Then Dirt process.
