Thurgood Marshall was born July 2, 1908 and died January 24, 1993. He was the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court. Before becoming a judge he was a lawyer and in 1934 Marshall was given the job of an assistant to the special counsel Charles Hamilton who was worked in Baltimore in a branch of the NAACP. Marshall moved up in the NAACP and became a special assistant to the organization. Marshall was an avid civil rights advocate and he represented clients across the United States. As the chief attorney for the NAACP, Marshall was known as the greatest constitutional lawyer of the 20th century. President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to the Second Supreme Court of appeals and it was confirmed by the Senate in 1961. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him as the Solicitor General of the United States in 1967 (Thurgood, 2012).
