We need to acknowledge that many more nurses are approaching retirement at the present time in the Western World (Europe and North America) because of the effect of the post World War Two 'baby boom'. Demographic statistics for these areas of the world show a huge 'bulge' or increase in the birth rate for the years 1946 to 1952 when men returned home after the end of that war. The women born in this period (and nurses are still predominantly female) are now reaching retirement age so this situation is more noticeable in nursing than many other professions.
