Asian American poetry focuses on culture, identity, family, ethnicity, and politics. Asian American poets began using this genre to explore their integration into American culture and their ethnic identity within America around the time that they began to immigrate her from various Asian countries. It is written to establish and defend the Asian identity while resisting oppressive stereotypes that have become all too common when discussing cultural subjects. According to Chang (2005), Asian American poetry "...reflects a shift away from [the] ideal of a 'recognizable Asian voice' and toward a poetry that transcends racial, gender, and cultural boundaries." It does noticeably lack historical content and often focuses on the moment instead of the past. By doing this, the poet does not lose sight of his or her past but rather moves forward without the stereotype of race attached to the writing. ...
