Jennifer, an African American woman, is approximately 22 years old and in her last semester at MTSU. Completing a BA in Business Administration with a minor in Conservation Studies. Completed two internships: Research Analyst in Washington D.C. and a marketing internship for an environmental consulting firm in SF where she continued to work part-time in her final semester. Has significant volunteer work experience as a tutor and mentor, treasurer for her sorority and event coordinator for the YWCA. She entered career counseling feeling "clueless" about a career direction. After successfully applying for and interviewing for five consulting positions she realized she hated the focus on "pure" analysis and valued life/work balance and subsequently eliminated consulting as a career path. She felt discouraged, worried and frustrated as her final semester drew near.Jennifer is a very bright and personable young woman. She is quite articulate and easily shares information about her work experiences and volunteer work. She lights up when discussing her love of using creativity in making scrapbooks and similar "design" projects. She expressed, "most careers don't value or draw upon her creative side.Jennifer had previously taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® but had not taken any other assessments or worked with a career counselor prior to counseling. Her MBTI results came back indicating that she is an ISTJ. She is very open to learning more about herself and is hopeful the process will yield some career ideas that she can act upon.

As a career counselor I would develop a four step program for Jennifer that entails initiation, cultivation, separation and redefinition. The initiation phase would require me to guide Jennifer toward her true potential by providing a support system that cultivates her skills and strengths. This leads me to the next session of the program that will involve me developing a cultivation phase that challenges Jennifer through instructional tools and techniques that are able to allow Jennifer to develop confidence, acquire new attitudes, values, and styles of operation that will assist her in obtaining a career suitable for her lifelong interests. The next stage would entail me allowing Jennifer to enable her own development by encouraging her to move forward on her own and pursue the interests that will bring forth success in her career pursuits. The final session would entail a redefinition phase that allows Jenifer to cultivate a peer relationship with me as a counselor wherein I would continue to encourage her growth as she rises through the different stages of life to acquire the career that she is seeking.

The only discernible way to acquire knowledge about how Jennifer envisions her career goals and the correlation to her lifespan is through a career diamond. Career diamonds illustrate the internal movements that Jennifer would experience as she pursues her career by allowing her to examine self-concepts in the context of realistic external demands.
