Sadly, I still see strong and biased influences that teachers bring to the classroom and their cultural presumptions in their ability to support the development of children from all sociocultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. For example, I once had a Vietnamese boy who was placed into my honors class. After a few weeks, he was severely failing my Pre AP English class. When I looked at his reading scores and past literacy records, he was below grade level and required remediation, not advanced classes. When I asked another teacher why she recommended him for my class, she actually admitted that it was because he was Asian! I ...
