RESPONSE:

Interesting question! Let's take a closer look through discussion and illustrative example.

1. I need an idea for an activity that clearly demonstrates teaching as an art and as a science. (This is not for an art and a science lesson; it is needed for an activity that represents the art as well as the science of teaching.)

According to Reynolds (2006) and many others, teaching is both an art and science. Reynolds puts forth an excellent explanation. She puts it this way:

Art and science may seem very different, but they are actually quite the same. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines art as "1: skill acquired by experience or study," and "3: an occupation requiring knowledge or skill"(p. 56 and 57). The Dictionary of Psychology defines science as "1. an organized and systematic body of knowledge."(p. 472). The difference I equate to the difference between wisdom and knowledge. The art of teaching focuses on the process of creating atmosphere, delivering relative information through a performance and creatively incorporating unexpected events into the lessons. The science of teaching focuses on the experimental aspect of teaching, facts, and cause and effect (Retrieved May 2, 2007 from http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/22648/the_art_and_science_of_teaching.html).

In other words,

· Psychology, math, or sociology is a science.
· A teacher is an artist.
· A good classroom balances knowledge and subject content (science) and creativity (art).

Let's use the science of psychology (a course in social psychology) as a case in point, which is based on my experience as a student in a social psychology course. You will be the teacher. ...
