If a child squeals with delight over a puppy and his excitement is met with a smile and a hug it re-enforces the child's feelings of the event equating it with happiness and excitement. If an emotion is reciprocated, the electrical and chemical signals that produced it are reinforced. But if emotions are met with a contradictory response, say for instance if a child builds a building out of Oreo cookies and it is met with an annoyed response from the parent, the circuits become confused and fail to strengthen.
