OSI model:
The Open Systems Interconnection model i.e. OSI is a product of the Open Systems Interconnection effort at the International Organization for Standardization [1]. The advantages and disadvantages of OSI model is depicted below:

Advantages of OSI:
The advantages of OSI model can be summarized in the following way:
*) It reduces the complexity: This model splits the network communication into smaller and simpler parts; it divides the communication process into small and simple manageable parts which eventually is helpful for component development, design and troubleshooting [2] [3].
*) It helps to simplify teaching and learning: In order to make the learning simpler and easier, the OSI model breaks down the network communication into smaller components. It offers a teaching tool for the purpose of aiding network administrators comprehend the communication method used between networking components.
*) It helps to accelerate evolution by providing useful updates and enhancements to individual components without affecting other components or avoiding the tedious task of rewriting the entire protocol.
*) It offers the facility of interoperability between vendors. Any hardware component having the OSI standard is able to communicate with any other hardware that also meets the standard. Similarly, any software having the OSI standard have the ability to communicate with any other hardware or software that also meets the standard
*) It gives the consumers a wider range of choice, since hardware/software from any manufacturer will have the ability to work together.
*) The OSI model is free from geographical limitations. The manufacturing location of a hardware or software doesn't matter for OSI. And very reasonable OSI is independent of operating system being used.
*) The different protocols for OSI at each stage/layer are defined properly. Each layer handles the errors that occur in that layer. Different layers posses the capability to operate automatically.

Disadvantages of OSI:
*) OSI model cannot be considered an efficient architecture when the issue of proprietary architecture comes in place.
*) The modular approach of OSI model adds extra overhead, which can slow down ...
