Please see the attached.

Methylene diphenyl di-isocyanate (MDI) is used as an adhesive ----- it is often cross-linked with maleic anhydride when in the presence of water.

We are asked to explain and detail out the structural components of this reaction.

I have a theory 1A and theory 1B ----- my guess is that the maleic anhydride hydrolizes in water to create maleic acid. Then I think one of 2 things happens: a) the maleic acid attacks the CH2 functional group in the diagram attached......or b), it attacks the more reactive isocyanate (NCO) functional group in the diagram attached.

Can sometime please take a stab at this reaction ---- so I need an explanation and then a diagram of the by-product reaction! I really need your help!
