The primary wrong committed by discrimination is that from the de-ontological ethical perspective it is the duty of the person not to discriminate against anyone (a person of different color, sex, religion, etc). When a person discriminates the person fails to perform her duty. For instance, it is the duty of a person making employment related decisions not to discriminate when hiring, promoting, giving increments, providing training, or firing. If the person discriminates during any of these activities she has not performed her duty. This is the primary moral wrong committed by discrimination. Similarly, if a person, organization, or an institution discriminates, from the perspective of consequential ethics the effects are enormous. The section of society discriminated against loses opportunities, becomes poor, and has weak health. The children of persons discriminated against have fewer opportunities, get alienated, and live on the margins of society. The consequences are deplorable.
