According to Duhon (1998), knowledge management (KM) is "a discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying, capturing, evaluating, retrieving, and sharing all of an enterprise's information assets. These assets may include databases, documents, policies, procedures, and previously captured expertise and experience in individual workers."
Knowledge can be explicit or tacit knowledge. Explicit knowledge can be easily passed on to others by teaching them or by storing them into a book or database. Tacit knowledge can hardly be quantified and most often learned by experience. KM allows for the easy sharing of information between staff, can increase innovation when ideas are easily shared, improve performance of staff as they are able to learn how to do their job better, and it can also result in savings as valuable knowledge is kept and never lost for future purposes. To implement KM, companies can use either technology-based systems or through softer systems. Technology-based systems include company's organized programs and databases, or a collaborative program where participants can read, add, or edit shared information.
