Current Role:
In my current position as offices HR the three competencies I require are knowledge, communication skills and critical thinking skills.
Competency One:
I require knowledge in human resources. This knowledge is required for carrying out my tasks and duties related to recruitment, placement, training, development, performance evaluation, payroll preparation, labor law issues, union related issues, and promotion/disciplinary action related matters. I also require knowledge of my company's culture, policies, revenue, and internal issues. This knowledge is required to align my HR work to the requirements of my organization(1). My knowledge base in both HR knowledge and cultural knowledge of my organization is strong. However, my weakness is my inability to network successfully in my organization. I come to know of policy developments only after they are officially announced in press.
Competency Two:
The second skill that is very important in my job is communication skills. I need these skills because I must communicate effectively with employees, prospective employees, managers in my company, and external service providers to my organization. For example, I must communicate effectively with the payroll processing company. In addition, I must be able to communicate employment related policies to the employees, explain them the employment law, and negotiate effectively with union representatives. For example, if a union representative comes to me with a grievance, I must be able to negotiate with him effectively and balance the interests of my company and employees. My strengths are interpersonal communication skills are excellent. I am strong in person to person communication, however, I face difficulty when communicating with a group of people. I must develop public speaking skils.
Competency Three:
The third skill that I require in my current job is critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are essential in my position because often I am faced with complex situations in which the law, procedures, ethics, and company's objectives have to be balanced (2).
