Retirement in a Unique Fashion!

Non-traditional approaches to retirement are booming. As we age it is apparent that we are still vibrant and active contributors to society. Although our parents and grandparents retired, often at the set age of 65, this no longer seems a required obligation, and there are many benefits to postponing retirement and even to continuing to work for an extended period of time. I am here to discuss a few avenues available for the aging worker:

Gradual or Phased Retirement: This is a method which the employee starts reducing their hours and slowly progresses towards no longer working at all. This is a process to be negotiated with employer. This is often seen as a more attractive alternative to quitting cold turkey, however, researchers have found that what matters is not "the type of transition (gradual retirement or cold turkey) but whether people perceive the transition as chosen or forced" (Calvo, Sass, Haverstick, n/d). A sense of control is important, as in all things we do, to make us feel positive in our new lifestyle and choices. Older workers generally feel this is a good method as a way to postpone retirement. ...
