Emerging technologies in the business of health care are giving people increasing abilities to do things that only a few decades ago were impossible. With those abilities come ethical questions.

A code of ethics, according to one legal definition is a set of principles of conduct within an organization that guide decision making and behavior. The purpose of the code is to provide members and other interested persons with guidelines for making ethical choices in the conduct of their work.

Another definition of ethics is "the branch of philosophy that defines what is good for the individual and for society and establishes the nature of obligations, or duties, that people owe themselves and one another"

The American Medical Association has what are considered to be the most robust set of ethical guidelines in the field of health care, primarily because it is developed from the extensive experience of all levels of medical professionals. Although these guidelines are not unimpeachable, they are a good place to start when providing and discussing a list of practical tips related to the ethics related to emerging health technologies.

The following list contains the guidelines from the AMA, prefaced by numbers. The asterisked comments are separate from these guidelines and are discussions of circumstances when those guidelines have become more difficult to comply with because of changing ethics.
