A little background information on MRSA
According to the CDC, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a staph bacteria that is resistant to beta-lactams. Beta-lactams basically are rings that accompany the aminopenicillanic acid. Many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which destroy the beta-lactam ring of penicillin. MRSA bacteria is resistant to methicillin, nafcillin, cloxacillin, oxacilin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes.
According to the Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs), cases of MRSA have three categories hospital-onset (HO), healthcare-associated community-onset (HACO), central vascular catheter (CVC), and community-associated (CA). The fourth category is used if the disease does not fall into the stated three.
