I would agree with the statement that both objective and subjective criteria should be used to determine whether a process is in control.
For example, I tend to want to keep the temperature of my home within a comfort range of 67-73 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to maintain within this comfort zone, I must manipulate the thermostat to increase or decrease the temperature according to my pre-defined setting. I could read the thermostat to objectively determine that the process is in control (i.e. that it is within the 67-73 range).
