Nominal data is the most basic. As I tell my students, the variables just are: male,female, Black, Caucasian, Egyptian, Hawaiian, tall, short. They cannot be tested in terms of order. Ordinals are those data that can be placed in order. Amount of pay, level of education, winners of a race, military personnel. Anything that can be ranked is ordinal.
