Norms are often social conventions that we internalize through socialization. Norms are defined by various members or organizations in society, such as norms set by families, religions, laws; protests from advocacy groups develop new social norms to replace outdated social norms, schools, dictators in communist countries, to name a few. Social norms are developed in this way for many social situations: "norms of politeness, norms of fairness, norms of appropriate dress, norms of behavior in business meetings, norms of gendered behavior, and norms of body language and tone of voice in police work."
