I gave a basic response to each prompt so you could choose the one to expand on. I did not realize Memo was married. I thought he was just engaged, so you can take that one if you choose prompt 1.

Exchange theory and Mi Familia

Jose and Maria - yes, in return for the different strengths of each person, they were given something they needed. Maria in particular, gave to Jose, children and a home, fighting against the odds to return to him with the son he expected she was going to have. She in return got a loyal and supportive husband who provided for her. One important scene that shows the exchange theory was when he was attempting to change Carlito, a very unfortunate event, where while he was trying to care for the boy, he had to get her to actually perform the diaper change. It is interesting to note that both of them got the family they wanted, which was their own, not one of his overburdened back in Mexico, or hers as caretaker of other people's children.

Irene - This marriage did not show as much of the exchange theory. Irene was allowed to do as she pleased, become the appropriate wife and her husband in return, provided her with a home, money to spend, and the opportunity to indulge herself in dress and appearance. The ...
