Cultural Change

The notion of cultural change is exactly what it means in its simplest iteration - a change in the culture seen as that which is in practice being the culture that is mass practiced, the one that has hegemony overall. To understand this, we need to define what culture is. Culture, simply put is a set of traditions, principles, ideologies, beliefs. These have emerged in a complex socialization process involving a particular group of people. In turn, these very set inform and influence the way these groups see themselves as well as how they are seen by others. This thus becomes a huge part of who they are informing their identity. Culture happens within the social dynamics of group interaction because of communication/discourse. When people communicate and mingle meanings and group practices are established. Dependent upon the type of group - primary (i.e. families), secondary (i.e. big formal & informal groups like organizations and communities) or referential (i.e. clubs, hobby groups, etc.), the culture that emerges can be shared by a few (making the practices rare/unique) or by a lot making the practices commonplace in a particular social group (i.e. practices by an ethnic group, practices by a corporate entity).
