Tiffany and her two children, Gabe (9 yrs) and Bryce (4 yrs) have been reported to the Department of Social Services by Gabe's Elementary School because he has been out of school for 18 days in the first three months of school. In addition, his teachers are concerned because when he is at school, Gabe sleeps during class, comes to school dirty and complains of being hungry.

TASK:
You are the case manager assigned to work with Tiffany and her sons. Upon your first interaction with Tiffany, you learn that Tiffany lost her job at a local mall, her home is being foreclosed on and within the last 12 hours the electricity was disconnected for failure to pay. Tiffany has no living relatives and her husband is in prison as a result of drug charges

Having volunteered, interned, and worked in child welfare, I have many thoughts on the scenario presented for analysis and help. However, I must point out that in case work, more specifically child welfare case work, each worker tends to develop their own style of delivering case management tasks. Each case worker interacts with clients differently depending on their personality, experiences, and expertise. So, in having said that, the scenario presented can be approached from various angles, depending on what type of case worker you are. What I will present in this solution will include my thoughts of managing this case as well as provide you some critical thinking questions to further help you develop your own style of working as a child welfare case manager. While the questions may come as frustrating at first, they are designed to help you dive into the scenario and challenge yourself to think through many possibilities.

Firstly, depending on the state in which you are delivering child welfare services, your approach is going to be influenced by certain degrees. Also, in some states, child welfare case management is contracted out to other agencies - called privatization. However, in looking at this scenario, I will provide suggestions based upon the assumption that the work is being conducted at a government agency.
