Nebuchadnezzar II, sometimes called Nebuchadrezzar, was mentioned in eight books of the Old Testament: Jeremiah, Daniel, 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah and Ezekiel.
1. Who was Nebuchadnezzar? He was the king of Babylonia (c.605-562 BC), son and successor of king Nabopolassar. He succeeded his Nabopolassar at the time when the war between Babylon and Egypt for the territories that had been part of the Assyrian empire was at its height. Nebuchadnezzar delivered Babylon from its dependence on Assyria and laid Nineveh in ruins. He was the greatest and most powerful of all the Babylonian kings. Modern study showed that Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest monarch that Babylon ever produced. He must have built or restored almost every city and temple in the whole country. The inscriptions discovered portray a detailed account of the immense works which he constructed in and about Babylon itself, abundantly illustrating the boast, 'Is not this great Babylon which I have built? (Dan 4:30). Perhaps he was the best known ruler of Babylon in the Chaldean Dynasty. He was the founder of the Neo-Babylonian or Chaldean empire which succeeded that of Assyria.
